Many publishers have issued many anthologies of pictures of Africa. None are quite like Through the Eyes of the Gods, which consists entirely of aerial photographs. Bobby Haas took them all from a helicopter. The African continent features very diverse landscapes, climates, cultures, and wildlife. Haas has photographed relatively familiar sights from a unique viewpoint. Being in a helicopter, especially when it was moving, makes careful composition more difficult than usual. Overall, Through the Eyes of the Gods may be less successful as art than some other collections.
Despite any artistic shortcomings, however, even people who have traveled to Africa and taken plenty of their own pictures have thoroughly enjoyed Through the Eyes of the Gods for views they couldn’t get from the ground. More important, many places that Haas photographed from the helicopter cannot be reached from the ground at all. His aerial photographs represent the only way people can possibly see them. Taken together, his pictures of both the accessible and inaccessible places show Africa’s vastness and complexity like no other collection.
Besides the book’s introduction, Through the Eyes of the Gods has no sustained narrative. Besides its informative captions, it does include journal entries and poems that nicely complement the stunning images. It also has the excellence of design and printing we have come to expect from National Geographic. People who enjoy coffee table books will find much to appreciate here.
