Plane Boat

why is that we’re ON a boat, ON a plane, ON a train, but we’re IN a car but never on it?
we’re always on a plane, train boat etc but we’re never on a car. its always in a car but we’d never say in a boat, in a plane, in a train etc.
Because we can walk about on a boat, a train or a ‘plane etc. But we can’t walk about in a car. Unless, of course, we are on top of it, and then we do say “on” a car!
If the ‘plane is a small one – you know – with just cockpit space, then we still say “in” a ‘plane. (And, yes, I appreciate that we do still say “in” a camper (van). But I would answer that it is an extension of a car (linguistically, if not ergonomically). After all, we do still say “on” a bus, coach, etc. (ie: when the vehicle gets big enough, ergonomically, to be really divorced from the car).
Nice question. keep loving language. (There’s always a logic there somewhere – or it isn’t language, just ideology.)
Incidentally, if the boat is quite a small one – a canoe or a dinghy – then we do still say “in”. Why? Because we can’t walk around ‘on’ it! Or at least, would not really want to.
